Lies about getting rich
Here's how you can cultivate the right mindset
Hey folks! I'm finally diving into a story I've been hesitant to share. At 25, I set a retirement goal for myself by 42 (shout out to other droogs) aiming for financial freedom early enough to enjoy life with my partner. Fast forward, I hit this goal at 29, way ahead of schedule, and it left me in a bit of an identity crisis, wondering, "What now?"
1. The Plan and the Pivot
My journey started with a clear goal and a detailed plan on achieving financial independence through passive income, essentially replacing my salary with returns from investments. This sounds straightforward, right? But there were there surprises: from underestimating taxes to reevaluating what “investment” even means. It wasn't just about the money; it became a quest for identity beyond my work and earnings.
2. Rethinking Work and Value
As I navigated this early success, I realized something crucial: your job isn't just a money subscription service. Companies pay you because you add more value than you cost them. And if you're playing the "worker" role, it's essential to understand ownership. Whether it's owning a piece of the company or mastering your skills and brand as a consultant, it's about ensuring you get a part of the value you help create.
3. Addressing The Money Mindset
Addressing our relationship with money is key. For many of us, money is a means to solve problems, but only a fraction of our problems are truly money-solvable. The challenge is to focus on increasing our market value, even when it feels like the deck is stacked against us. It's about shifting from a poverty mindset to one that seeks opportunities and solutions, understanding the types of problems money can (and cannot) solve.
I'm not here to offer a magical solution to all your financial or existential dilemmas. But, I urge you to consider your mindset about money and work. It's about playing the long game, recognizing the value you bring, and preparing for success in all its forms. Remember, it's not just about reaching financial goals; it's about what comes after and how you adapt and grow. Curious to dive deeper into ethical financial health, saving, and investing? Stay tuned, and let's keep this conversation going in the comments.
